Los Angeles protests (Social media)
Los Angeles Protest: The deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles on the instructions of US President Donald Trump has further heated up the political and social atmosphere. When about 300 soldiers entered the city on Sunday, there was a fierce clash between protesters and security officials. This action was taken despite strong objections from Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass.
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center located in the downtown area of the city, who were protesting against the recent immigration raids and arrests of immigrants. When the protesters tried to get close to the National Guard soldiers, the security forces fired tear gas shells and tried to push them back. During this, one protester was injured, and many people were thrown to the ground.
Trump described this deployment as a necessary step to maintain law and order. He said that if the state administration fails to stop chaos and violence, then intervention at the federal level becomes mandatory. Citing a special legal provision, Trump approved the deployment of about 2,000 National Guard soldiers.
This is the first time that troops have been deployed in a state on federal orders without the permission of the governor. The last time such a measure was taken was in 1965, when President Lyndon Johnson deployed troops to protect the civil rights march in Alabama. This move has since sparked fierce debate across political circles.
More than 100 immigrants were detained in recent immigration raids in California. The arrest of a key union leader further escalated tensions in the situation. Governor Newsom has strongly opposed this move, calling it a mere political show.
Trump ally and House Speaker Mike Johnson supported the deployment, saying that when the state becomes incapable, the federal government has to step in. At the same time, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called it a threat to democracy and called it a step towards authoritarianism.
The deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles has further heightened the city's unrest. In the coming days, this topic will be the center of intense discussion in American politics and human rights matters.
